Lots of stay-at-home parents choose to work from home to make extra money or support a frugal lifestyle. However, not everyone wants to run an eCommerce business selling products. Fortunately, parents have many small-business options beyond online sales—and you can run them from a home office.

Determining Business Structure

Decide what business structure is best for your company before you begin. Forming an S Corporation offers several benefits, including self-employment tax savings and pass-through taxation. Business owners can also opt to claim losses as tax deductions through an S Corp.

You might not have a budget for high lawyer fees right away. You can avoid them by filing for an S Corp yourself or using a formation service. Before you form an S Corp, review your state's rules.

Going Back to School

You may decide getting a degree will make your business more marketable. If so, you can consider taking classes online or signing up for in-person times that work around your family's schedule. One online degree option is cybersecurity. If you decide to earn a cybersecurity degree online, you’ll be well-equipped for potential remote opportunities in the field. It teaches you:

 •    Best practices in services and systems
 •    Scripting and programming
 •    Networking and security
 •    Data management
 •    The business of information technology

You can also consider degrees in business, accounting, marketing or others that boost your entrepreneurial skills.

Choosing a Career

Once you've ironed out the business details, it's time for the fun part: to decide what career path you want to take.

Tutoring is a great work-from-home option. You can tutor students at your house, travel to their homes, or offer virtual services. Start by defining your client base: only high-school students, for example, or a particular subject such as science. You can take on a couple of students to start or branch into full-time work.

Photography is a versatile and creative career choice. Decades ago, photographers needed a darkroom setup and studio, but today you have more flexibility. You can go on location to photo sessions and complete your photos digitally. You may need to invest in high-quality cameras and digital equipment or take photography classes to get started.

Pet care is an excellent option for animal lovers. You can adapt the business to fit your schedule and accommodations. You can operate a grooming business, for example, from your home or offer a mobile service. If you have the space, you can board pets overnight at your house or travel to clients' homes to care for them.

Other Career Options

Graphic design is another career that's possible to do from home. You can work as a freelancer, allowing you to create a flexible schedule. Graphic design encompasses printed and digital pieces: newsletters, posters, brochures, signage, websites and social media advertising. You'll need a dependable computer to run design programs that require lots of memory. You may also need a high-quality printer and scanner.

Are you fluent in other languages? Consider starting a translation service. According to job experts, the employment of interpreters and translatorsis expected to grow 20% over the next several years. Your upfront costs may include a computer, internet connection, printer and current reference materials. Your target market can be global, and you can work in various medical, legal and technical industries.

Fortunately for stay-at-home parents, business opportunities are more varied than ever. Once you've determined your business structure, gone back to school and set up your company, it's up to you to reap the benefits.

5 Steps to Launching a Budget-Friendly Business with your Significant Other

Maybe you and your significant other have always imagined that you would start a business together one day. Now, you’ve finally reached a place in life where you can make this dream come true, but you’re not sure how to get your company off the ground while keeping your romance alive. And if you’re on a slim budget, you might be worried about whether or not you’ll be able to succeed as an entrepreneurial team. It is possible to keep your costs under control while starting your business. Furthermore, these tips will help you launch a business without losing the spark!

Choose a Business Idea

In order to kick off your entrepreneurial journey as a couple, you’ll need to agree on a business idea. If you’re working with limited funds, you’ll want to choose an idea with low overhead expenses. Renting a brick-and-mortar space, or leasing expensive equipment, will probably be out of your reach. Tweak Your Biz recommends starting a business centered on social media management, web design, virtual assistance, event planning, or home-based food services, like custom baking.

Invest in Accounting Software

No matter the size of your budget, every business owner should use software for bookkeeping to manage their finances. This will allow you to manage your business income effectively and ensure that you’re not wasting a dime. Furthermore, you’ll be able to store and organize all of your receipts and other financial documents so that you can stay compliant and earn deductions when tax season rolls around. Plus, you’ll be able to easily assess your cash flow whenever you like.

Nail Down the Basics

In order to officially launch your business, you’ll need to take care of a few administrative items. Sit down together to draw up a business plan, and then get the paperwork you’ll need to register your business in your state. You will also need to create a budget to ensure that you don’t overspend. Furthermore, you can jot down ideas for your marketing and sales strategies.

Working Well Together

When you’re opening a business with your significant other, you want to make sure that personal disputes don’t affect your company’s operations. It’s important to stay on the same page as far as your goals for your business and your finances. Marriage recommends coming up with plans for dealing with common problems in advance, keeping your family’s finances separate from your company finances, and setting boundaries between your work and your downtime.

Keep the Romance Alive

If you’re busy getting your company going, how can you and your partner make time for each other? Time management is key. Choose a time each day when you’ll “clock in” and “clock out.” Outside of those boundaries, stay away from work-related tasks and focus on each other instead! Close your laptops and turn your attention to your relationship.

As entrepreneurs, it can be tough to stay away from business projects when you could be relaxing - you might feel like you have to work constantly in order to stay ahead of your competition. But enjoying your coffee together in the morning, taking leisurely lunch breaks each day, and scheduling a date night each weekend will help you balance your relationship and your business.

Running a business with your significant other does bring unique challenges. But at the same time, you’ll have some advantages - you’re already in sync, you share the same values, and you understand each others’ strengths and weaknesses. With these tips, you’ll be able to start a cost-effective business without neglecting your romantic relationship.

14 Real Ways To Make Money Online

Looking to earn some money on the side? The Internet can help. Wise Bread has rounded up 13 scam-free ways to make money online, from TaskRabbit to Skillshare. Keep reading and start raking in the money!

Thanks to faster and better start-ups sprouting all around the country, you are now able to make some extra dough on the side. You might even be able to ditch the whole 9-to-5 nonsense and set your own hours by booking gigs online. Whether it's tutoring children on the fine art of calligraphy or delivering meatball sandwiches to hungry office staff, there is a way to make money online, waiting for you.

JACK (& JILL) OF ALL TRADES
Let's start with the gigs that are available to those who are competent in many skills, but not necessarily outstanding in any particular one.

1. TaskRabbit
Unlike Liam Neeson in the movie Taken, you don't have a set of "particular skills." But if you have a lot of free time and a great attitude, then TaskRabbit allows you to make money for tasks such as:
  • Waiting in line for concert tickets.
  • Installing blinds.
  • Assembling Ikea furniture.
  • Cleaning an apartment for somebody moving out.
  • Becoming part of a flash mob.
This service is currently available in 19 cities - including Austin, TX; Chicago; and Seattle - and each task is insured up to $1 million. While the fine print states that TaskRabbit takes 20 percent from your fee, it also guarantees you a minimum of one hour for payment.

2. Postmates
If you felt the biggest adrenaline rush watching Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Premium Rush, then you are a perfect candidate for joining the urban courier service Postmates. The service only requires you to be older than 18, have a method of transportation (e.g., bike, moped, car), and an iPhone.

Deliveries range from restaurant takeout to shopping pickup, so you have to be flexible, upbeat, and ready for anything (legal).

3. Fiverr
What if you're a bit more experienced than the average master of all trades? If you are really good at one of your many skills and are able to complete it fast, then you can churn that specific skill on Fiverr. Some examples of Fiverr gigs are:
  • Record a professional voice-over in an English or American accent.
  • Take pictures of yourself while holding a sign and looking pretty.
  • Design a logo.
All gigs pay $5, so you need to be creative to provide irresistible "gig extras" - such as same-day delivery, files in high resolution, or alternative takes - for your clients to book. Gig extras often range between $10 and $20 and provide a well-needed boost to make Fiverr worth your while.

4. Fancy Hands and Zirtual
Unleash your inner Peggy Olson, Joan Holloway, or Pam Beesly by offering your kick-butt secretarial and personal-assistant services to the highest bidder. Through Fancy Hands and Zirtual, you can get paid for requests such as:
  • Coordinate airport pickup and car rental for a traveling businessman
  • Research the cheapest (and fastest!) way to ship an unusual package from DC to Miami
  • Coordinate appropriate meeting times for a party of 15 people
  • Organize a Dropbox folder of pictures for a real estate broker by property listing.

5. Airtasker
This company is a trusted community platform that connects people who need to outsource jobs and find local services, with people who are looking to earn money and ready to work.

From simple to complicated tasks, Airtasker can help you complete your household chores, virtual works to business works.

Airtasker is currently only available in Australia, United Kingdom and Ireland. Please note that people can only post tasks if they are in other country. If people are completing tasks, they must be located in the same country and have local working rights such as minimum wage. Both of these conditions apply to remote tasks. (Note: We will expand into other countries soon and maybe change the above conditions in the future, and it will be announced in our Facebook page and blog.)

TEACHER & TUTOR
If you've got skills so mad that you can take somebody to school, then you can make money online by offering your teaching and tutoring services.

6. Skillshare
Skillshare is such a popular option to make money online by teaching, that even actor James Franco jumped on the bandwagon with a 15-video lesson on screenwriting for short films. Heck, even famous marketing whiz Steve Godin offers not one but two courses.

Other examples of classes you can create to make some side money include:
  • How to use Adobe Illustrator.
  • What it takes to make perfect Southern fried chicken and biscuits.
  • How to knit a colorblock triangle scarf.
  • What do you need to write a one- to four-minute comedy sketch.

7. WyzAnt
I cannot tell you how to pronounce the company name, but I can tell you from personal experience that WyzAnt is pretty neat. This tutoring search engine matches students with more than 75,000 tutors in hundreds of subjects, such as math, science, test prep, and foreign languages.

The site is great for new and experienced tutors to expand their client base without spending any money on advertising. Most WyzAnt tutors set their hourly rate between $30 and $60. Keep in mind that the site keeps 40 percent of your payment until you become an established tutor. However, WyzAnt does offer several incentives to boost your earnings. For example, they often run promos during which you keep 95 percent of your payments when referring new students to the platform.
8. Tutor.com
Unlike WyzAnt, Tutor.com focuses on online tutoring. Since you meet with your students in an online room, you are required to have a good computer and a reliable Internet connection. Another important difference from WyzAnt is that Tutor.com offers you a minimum average of five hours per week, which is important for teachers looking for more steady income. As a sample of potential income, Tutor.com claims that its most active chemistry tutors earn anywhere from $800 to $1,600 a month.

9. Preply
Preply is a new marketplace startup for tutors where students can find them and order lessons. Lessons might be online (via skype) or locally.

There are around 50,000 tutors in various subjects such as languages as well as school or college subjects and even hobbies. Prices vary from $2-$3 and up to $100 per hour.

Preply might be a good source of income when you need extra cash - you can start teaching students in your native language in a conversational manner.

DRIVER

If you've got a nice set of wheels and driving skills that would make Jason Statham of The Transporter green with envy, then you should explore becoming a freelance driver.

10. Lyft and Uber

Lyft

Known for the pink mustaches on the hoods of its cars, Lyft is a peer-to-peer transportation service that focuses on smartphone users that request rides on the go. The entire application can be completed through your smartphone, and it includes:
  • A background check.
  • A review of your driving record.
  • Current auto insurance.
If you pass the driver orientation, then you are on your way to making money as a part-time driver. Lyft welcomes both full-time taxi drivers and part-timers looking for an extra buck.

Uber
If you talk about Lyft, you have to talk about Uber. Both transportation services are pretty much the same. However, there are a couple important differences between these two:

•  Uber comes in two flavors: Uber (black town car, fancy-pants service) and uberX (lower-cost Uber service). Lyft is comparable to to uberX.

• A driver that uses both Uber and Lyft, whose answer has been upvoted more than 200 times on Quora, claims that:
  • The majority of Lyft drivers are women, while the majority of Uber drivers are men.
  • Generally, uberX is cheaper than Lyft.
  • While Lyft focuses on friendliness, Uber focuses on professionalism.

11. Getaround and RelayRides
Do Lyft and Uber sound like too much work? If you are not interested in playing Driving Miss Daisy anytime soon but do have a car sitting around most of the time, then you can look into Getaround and RelayRides. Both peer-to-peer car-sharing services allow people with idle cars to rent them out to individuals.

Along those lines, you might want to:

HOST
If you enjoy being the hostess with the mostest, then cash in your good customer-service skills with these three options.

12. Airbnb
If you've got a spare couch or a whole rental property, then you can post on Airbnb, an online marketplace for vacation rentals that connects hosts and guests around the world.

The great thing about Airbnb is that you have total control over your pricing and your guests. Also you can decide how much (or how little) your property is available. By forcing all users to link their Facebook profiles to their accounts, Airbnb turns out to be a more reliable source of guests than alternatives, such as Craigslist or random bulletin boards. You get a better overview of who is interested in your property.

13. DogVacay
Turn your love for pooches into a business by becoming a DogVacay host. This is a great opportunity for dog lovers that have either the available space or the skills (e.g., grooming, training, or walking). This online community takes a 15 percent service fee for hosts, provides $3 million in commercial general liability, plus $25,000 of veterinary coverage for dogs in your care, custody and control, and provides 24-7 emergency support.

Keep in mind that the site highly encourages its hosts to create a PayPal account to process payments. If you insist on getting a check through the mail, be ready to take a $5 charge and wait up to seven business days for payment.

14. JustPark
If you want to keep things as simple as possible, then you can rent out your parking spot through JustPark. This is a great way to make money online in crowded cities, where parking spots are limited and come at a premium. The beauty of this service is that theoretically you can make your parking spot at home available while you're at work and vice versa. Talk about maximizing your earnings potential!

Resolutions For The New Year

As we approach the end of 2015, most of us look ahead to the new year and make a handful of resolutions, goals, wishes, intentions, dreams, whatever you wish to call it - the slate is clean to start fresh and new!

Some of the most common new year's resolutions are...
  1. Lose weight/get fit
  2. Make more money
  3. Eat healthier
  4. Get out of debt
  5. Spend more time with family/friends
  6. Quit smoking/drinking
  7. Get organized
  8. Reduce stress
  9. Improve career/job
  10. Travel to new places

I consider myself fortunate that I've either achieved or don't need to worry about some of the most common resolutions listed above. For instance, I am very organized, I have minimal debt, I don't have stress in my life, I get together with close friends on a regular basis and I try to make smart eating choices. However, there are still some goals or resolutions that I would like to check off my list by the end of 2016.

Next year, I plan to continue to strive to achieve these on-going goals:
  • Continue to live the frugal lifestyle and save money wherever and whenever I can.
  • Automatically put away money towards the next dream vacation.
  • Eat healthy, whole, nutritious foods (vs. processed & fast foods) as often as possible.
  • Work on DIY home improvement projects.
  • Plan a trip to either Spain, Ecuador or Australia.
  • Discover additional sources of passive income.
  • Improve my finances and in order to have more financial freedom.
  • Volunteer at an animal shelter, foster or rescue an English or French Bulldog.
  • Go for longer walks and take yoga classes.
  • Donate to various charities, especially animal organizations.

The primary goal I would like to achieve in 2016, is to have more financial freedom! I'd like to think that I am wiser as I get older. But most importantly, my goal and purpose is to experience joy everyday, all year long. And to be grateful for the many blessings in my life.

Have a healthier, happier, wiser and wealthier year ahead!

Cheap Cell Phone Service

What is one of your biggest recurring monthly expense besides mortgage or rent and a car payment? I'm quite fortunate that I don't have a car payment and my mortgage payment is pretty reasonable. However, it was only a year ago that I finally got smart and ditched my expensive mobile phone service plan - I won't mention names, but the company has an A, a T and another T in their name! I was paying almost $90 a month for very limited talk minutes, an additional $5 for a 200 text plan. I did keep my "unlimited" data plan since I signed my "contract" back in 2009. So needless to say, I've been out of that dreaded 2-year contract since 2011.

I found out about this new company, named Solavei that offered affordable cell phone service for only $49 per month. I was definitely interested in finding out more! They exceeded my expectation by offering unlimited everything... unlimited voice, text and data for $49 a month on a 4G T-Mobile network. I was lucky that my phone was compatible (GSM), and that I was not in a contract, and that my phone was already unlocked. But it gets even better, Solavei also offers an opportunity for everyone to share this great savings with others. If you tell 3 other people and they sign up their mobile phone service with Solavei, you earn $60 total - so basically your cell phone service if free! Tell more people, you make even more money! How absolutely cool is that - frugal and savvy!

Plus, Solavei is having a "Fall into Savings" promotion, get your first 2 months, of unlimited 4G mobile service for just $39/month. Hurry, this deal ends 10/31/13, phone service must be activated by 11/15/13 for the $39 (first 2 months). Taxes and fees may apply.

To find out more about this great savings and opportunity to make money, visit this website for more details.
http://www.solavei.com/MarissaWinfrey. If you have any questions, send me an email or call 310-619-3055.

Get Paid To Lose Weight

Happy Frugal and Fit Friday! This post is a follow up on a previous post I did on The Healthy and Wealthy Lifestyle. I'm proud to say that I accomplished my goal... I lost 25 pounds and I got paid $100. So, not only am I thinner and healthier, I'm now also a little bit wealthier!

I took part in EPX Body's 90-day weight loss challenge. Instead of paying a company to help me lose weight, I decided to go with company that pays me to lose weight! I want to share my experience and my testimonial about my journey. Check out my before and after photos!

How have I transformed through the EPX Body Challenge?
My eating habits have greatly improved. I no longer crave or want "sweets" as much as I used to. I eat mostly protein for breakfast and lunch and I have cut down on my carb intake dramatically, which tended to make me hungrier. For dinner, I eat a small salad, which doesn't weigh me down before bedtime. I am confident that I will continue to maintain these good eating habits. The 90-day weight loss challenge did not seem like a "diet" at all, it's taught me to make better choices in what I eat and I have never been hungry or felt like I was missing something. Plus, I saved a lot of money by eating in vs. going out to eat. Now that's frugal.

I believe the 90-day weight loss challenge has been a better and more successful journey for me because my boyfriend Jim Roguski and I did the challenge together. We have been each other's accountability coach. Since I have an aversion to exercise, the only form of exercise I've done is walking. Therefore, it is possible to achieve weight loss with this challenge without much exercise at all.

The best result is how I feel about myself. It feels good to look better and be comfortable in my clothes. I've even had to buy new "skinny" clothes! I am now my own walking testimonial which proves that with determination along with effective EXP Body products anyone can lose the weight and be healthier.

I'm very thankful that EPX Body developed the 90-day weight loss challenge, it was the motivating factor that made me finally achieve my goal to lose the pounds I've haven't been able to before.

Who is EPX Body?
EPX Body is a company that offers excellent nutritional products as well as a 90-day challenge program. It helps people all over the world to lose weight, plus they can get paid up to $500, depending on how many pounds they lose! The challenge was created to motivate anyone to make a positive lifestyle change, while transforming their mind and body.

Once I became involved with EPX Body, not only did I transform my body (and mindset)  by losing weight with the aid of their supplements, I also transformed my financial situation by earning residual income from promoting my EPX Body business.

Giving Forward Pays You Back

Happy Tuesday! I've always looked for ways to save a buck or two. But, I've also donated to various charities, from Goodwill to the Humane Society to Disabled Veterans to Habitat For Humanity among others. But it never felt like I made that much of a difference. There's always been a purpose I've been seeking that's beyond my frugal lifestyle. I believe I've found something that is fulfilling on a deeper level.

The new company I'm a part of, New Earth has a GIVE program that facilitates their associates to purchase nourishing products and donate them on our behalf to impoverished and undernourished children in the United States through organizations such as Feeding America.

Not only are their superfoods healthy and nutritious, but we can earn commissions by donating them. As the saying goes, it's better to give than to receive, but with this business you are both the giver and the receiver. It's my opportunity to be both an entrepreneur and a philanthropist in my own small way. While giving selflessly to hungry children compensates me monetarily, the payback is much more rewarding spiritually. I believe it can make a profound difference in peoples lives, both to the children we help and ourselves.

What does living frugally mean to me? Well, it does NOT mean being cheap, quite the contrary, I believe it’s being smart in your choices, such as how you spend your money everyday. Prioritize and take control of what’s important to you. I always strive to spend less on almost everything.

In this challenging economy, some of us have had to cut back on our expenses. Wouldn't it be nice to still have the things or services you want and need but not have to pay full price or even better, get them for free?

Choose value and quality over quantity or fads and you will come out ahead. The great benefit of being frugal is that it eliminates waste and clutter which in turn helps our environment.  By doing simple changes towards more “green” and frugal ways, together we can make an impact on our planet.

    About Me

    Picture
Hi, my name is Marissa Winfrey and I have been living the frugal life ever since I can remember. I have always looked for great bargains and getting the best value for my money without compromising style and quality.

My background is in visual display and interior decorating. It’s always been my objective to recommend cost effective solutions to my clients. I, of course, practice what I preach! I have furnished my own homes mostly with furnishings and decor items from my own little vintage boutique, estate sales, discount stores, flea markets, yard sales, thrift stores and even curbside discarded furniture!

My frugal practice goes beyond the home. I offer money saving tips on just about everything, from shopping to travel and everything in between. I hope my blog and website will inspire everyone to be their own Frugalista.

How to Retire Happy, Wild, and Free:
Retirement Wisdom That You Won't Get from Your Financial Advisor

How to Retire Happy, Wild, and Free offers inspirational advice on how to enjoy life to its fullest. The key to achieving an active and satisfying retirement involves a great deal more than having adequate financial resources; it also encompasses all other aspects of life -- interesting leisure activities, creative pursuits, physical well-being, mental well-being, and solid social support.

What sets this retirement book apart from all the others is its holistic approach to the fears, hopes, and dreams that people have about retirement. This international bestseller (over 110,000 copies sold in its first edition) goes way beyond the numbers that is often the main focus of retirement planning in most retirement books.
