Being rich is a state of mind. I personally feel a great sense of reward when I've uncovered ways to get value for my money. The key is with a little time and effort, you can enjoy life without scrimping.
Here are savvy ways I've been able to save money and enjoy my lifestyle without compromise.
1. HOUSING
I've owned my home for almost 20 years. I like where I live and I'm comfortable in my little Spanish bungalow. I wanted to spend less on my mortgage payment, so I was able to refinance to a lower fixed interest rate.
I'm saving almost $200 a month - which is money I'm able to put toward savings, renovations to the house or a great home accessory item snagged at a discount store to update the decor.
2. DINING OUT
I love going out to eat. Although I mostly eat at home (to save money), it's a treat to explore new restaurants and try different cuisines.
When I do go out, I either use coupons I receive in the mail or I use Restaurant.com discount vouchers at my favorite restaurants or at newly discovered places.
3. COFFEE
If you're like me, I need my coffee fix in the morning. I treat myself to a cup of Starbucks coffee with ample chocolate powder and cream. I order a tall in a grande cup so I always have "room for cream."
I have their gold rewards card, which lets me get a free drink or food after purchasing 12 drinks. Plus, coffee refills are free!
4. TECH GADGETS
Are you someone who has to have the latest computer, laptop, smartphone, tablet, etc?
Recently, I had to have my MacBook Pro laptop fixed. Instead of buying the latest version of the MacBook Pro (retail $1,999), I simply had it repaired for less than $300. It feels like a brand new computer!
When I am ready for a new gadget, I will purchase it from Amazon.com to get the best deal.
5. CELL PHONE SERVICE
I used to pay more than $80 for mobile phone service with AT&T. I searched for a cheaper and better plan and found a company called Solavei that uses the T-Mobile network.
I now pay less than $40 for 4G LTE unlimited voice, text and data without a contract. In addition to saving $40 a month (half of what I was paying), after I refer 6 people to sign up, my cell phone service is free!
6. DESIGNER BRANDS
Do you love name brand items? Whether it's clothing, shoes, bags or accessories, you can get your fix and not have to settle for knockoffs.
I regularly shop at retail stores such as Marshall's and TJ Maxx. I've also scored brand-name items on eBay and Craigslist. I've also found great shirts from J Crew, Lucky Brand, Gap, etc.. at Goodwill.
I've even nabbed some awesome designer clothing and accessories at estate sales and yard sales in more upscale neighborhoods.
7. ENTERTAINMENT
I love watching shows about travel, home improvement and select TV shows like "Modern Family" and "Jane The Virgin".
I feel I made the best decision by getting rid of my television and cable bill almost five years ago. I now watch ONLY the shows I want for free on Hulu. I can also upgrade to see more shows. I rent DVDs from Redbox to save a bundle on tickets, popcorn and parking!
For nights out on the town, I often check sites like LivingSocial.com for great deals on things to do over the weekend.
8. TRAVEL
One of my passions is seeing the world. I travel at least once (sometimes twice) a year to a new destination.
One of the ways I've saved money is by attending a 90-minute sales presentation about the hotel's resort. We've been able to save on either accommodations, meals or other perks. Another great option for vacation rental properties is HomeAway.com. I was able to find an apartment in the heart of Paris, France for much less than a hotel.
