Less is More: Free Yourself from Stress and Unnecessary Stuff

3/26/2019

Anyone can make their lives a little less complicated and a lot more stress-free. I've listed some ways that I've personally done to simplify my life and in the process either saved money or even made some money!
Picture

Here are 13 ways on simplifying your life:

1. Declutter and Purge - We all tend to accumulate "stuff". When it becomes a bit overwhelming, it's time to declutter your home, your car, your closet, your purse/wallet and your office. I allow myself to purchase one new (or vintage) item as long as I've purged one item out aka the "one in, one out" rule. I usually have a garage sale (extra money, yay!) or donate it to charity once I've edited things I no longer need or want.

2. Organize - Now that you've gotten rid of unnecessary clutter, it's time to get organized! I've found that baskets are a great way to keep things neat and tidy. I use baskets for towels in the linen closet, for office supplies, I even use baskets in my refrigerator. Keep paperwork, bills, invoices, etc.. labeled and filed in folders. You can also save a lot of time by organizing your closet so that you can see everything at a glance. By having a place for everything it will make it easier and simpler to find things when you need them.

3. Consolidate Finances - Although I believe in having a diversified investment portfolio, I think having one or two banking institutions has made my life a little more simple. I only use one credit card (linked to my checking account) which I always pay off each month. Plus it's a cash-back rewards credit card. I keep track of all of my expenses daily, so there are no surprises  (like fraudulent charges). I have my savings and CD's with Ally Bank, which is a great online bank that offers one of the best interest rates around.

4. Make a List - I'm a big believer of writing things down. Whether it's a grocery list, an errands list, a 5 year goal list, etc.. I think it's important to visualize your tasks or goals. For example, by having a list when I go food shopping, I tend to stick to the list and in turn save money along the way. It's a great feeling to cross something off my list once I've accomplished said item on list.

5. Eliminate Cable & Phone Landline - I eliminated both my cable/satellite and home phone line years ago. It's so freeing to not waste time flipping channels looking for shows I don't really care about. I now only watch my favorite shows online for free when I want to. I got rid of my landline and only use my cell phone, because my cell plan is unlimited everything, this saves me a lot of money! My only home technology expense is the internet, which I was able to negotiate my rate with AT&T since I've been a customer for over 10 years.

6. Plan Errands Efficiently - When I run errands or go shopping, I try to do it all in one trip. Not only does this save me time and effort, but it saves on gasoline as well. If there's a coupon that's about to expire and it's something I am actually going to use, I plan my trip around that day.

7. Automate Payments - Most people already do this - by automating your bill paying online, you will never miss a payment, which means you avoid late fees plus you save money on postage. Set up auto payments for your mortgage, credit card, utilities, etc online. Make sure to keep track of your recurring expenses so that you know you're within your monthly budget. You should also automatically deposit a recurring amount to your savings account.

8. Don't Let Things Pile Up - The most overwhelming part of tidying up is when it's a big pile of mess! Don't let things get to a point where it seems too much to take on. For example, when the mail arrives, designate whether it's something to keep or toss in recycle bin. Also, when you have enough dirty clothes for a large load (in cold water to save energy) then it's time to do the laundry. Rather than waiting till there's a pile of dirty dishes in the sink, wash them after each meal. By doing chores when they need to be done will seem less daunting.

9. Pay Off Your Debt - This is easier said than done, but once you've eliminated or at least reduced your debt, you will feel a sense of freedom that's priceless! One tip I've already shared is to pay off your credit card balance at the end of each month, which means you don't incur interest charges. I have a set amount each month that I try to not go over (barring emergencies of course). Tackle your lower balanced loans or debts first and try to pay those off right away. If possible, use cash as much as possible and only spend what you can afford to pay off.

10. Eat Leftovers - I think it's a shame when perfectly good food goes to waste. Often times when we go out to eat, I or some of my friends have food they couldn't finish - I'm always the one packing it up to take home. By eating leftovers, it's just one more meal I don't have to worry about cooking, plus it's über frugal. Another simple tip that goes a long way is to make chicken soup in a slow cooker, this can make several cups of soup and clean up is easy!

11. Shop Around For Better Rates - Whether it's getting lower costs for your mortgage interest rate, mobile phone service, insurance rates, credit card interest rates or internet service, etc... it pays to shop around or better yet, if you are happy with your current provider, call them and ask to them to lower your payment. Most companies will give you a lower rate in order to keep you as their (happy) customer.

12. Sell Your Unwanted Treasures - When you are clearing out your home or office, you will most likely come across items that are a little more than "garage sale" material. I have sold many items on LetGo, OfferUp, Craigslist, etc that I do not need anymore such as furniture, electronics, designer shoes, plants, books, purses, etc.

13. Recycle, Recycle, Recycle - Instead of throwing away paper, cardboard, plastic, or glass... take it to your local recycling center. Not only is it good for the environment, but you get paid in cash! Make sure to have designated containers for each category at home, to keep things organized.

10 Fun & Free Ways to Enjoy the Rest of Summer

Can you believe Summer is almost over? You don't have to spend any money to enjoy what's left of summer. If your budget is tight and you still want to feel like you're on a mini vacation or staycation, keep reading! Here's 10 of my favorite ways to have a fun, fabulous and free ways to enjoy the remainder of this summer season!

  1. The Beach - If you are lucky enough to live within driving distance to a beach (or a lake or a river or even just a pool), take advantage as much as you can this summer. Go early so you can find a good parking spot nearby, for free of course! Pack some essentials - such as food, drinks, reading materials, sunglasses, beach chairs, towels, etc.. and just relax and maybe even work on your tan!
  2. Street Fairs - Check online for local summer fairs in nearby towns or cities. Admission is usually free and there are always lots to see and taste. We recently came back from the nations largest single day street faire in Carlsbad, CA. We didn't buy anything, but many vendors offer free samples.
  3. Summer Concerts - Many local communities offer free outdoor summer concerts. This is a fabulous way to enjoy your city's music scene and learn about new bands and hear great music. Check your local listings throughout the summer.
  4. Stroll Old Town - This is one of my favorite things to do, in any season! Most areas have a downtown or old town with quaint local stores (vs. chain stores). Leisurely stroll and stop in at the shops and maybe grab a little bite to eat at one of the cozy cafes. I enjoy checking out little antique shops. This is a great way to discover little gems for one-of-a-kind treasures.
  5. Farmers Markets - Hit your local farmers market early so you get the freshest produce. Support local growers (vs. big box supermarkets), often times they are cheaper and offer a much better quality. Most vendors offer samples too! You can also shop for healthier organic options. Make a shopping list of items you might need ahead of time, so you won't overspend.
  6. Scenic Drives - Go a little off the beaten path to areas where you normally wouldn't drive to. Make sure it's not too far so you won't waste money on gas. Map out your destination ahead of time. Make sure to stop when you can to take in the sights.
  7. Picnics At The Park - Pack a light picnic lunch and drive (or walk) to your favorite park. Pick a quiet, shaded spot and enjoy your meal. Bring some music or reading material if you plan to go by yourself.
  8. Explore New Neighborhoods - This is a great way to feel like you are exploring a new neighborhood in another state or country! Pick a neighborhood, park your car, then meander around their downtown or residential area. I love walking around quaint residential streets with beautiful homes, I get inspirations on how I can improve my own home's curb appeal.
  9. Flea Markets - One of my favorite destinations to shop! There are several flea markets or swap meets happening every Sunday. I usually find unique, one-of-a-kind gifts or something for myself for dirt cheap. Don't be afraid to negotiate with the vendor. Most of them would rather sell the item(s) vs. take it back home with them.
  10. Go To The Museum or Zoo - Most communities offer "free to the public" admission days. Call your local zoo or museum ahead of time and take advantage of these great local attractions.

Backyard Renovation on a Budget

Renovating your backyard doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. With little imagination and several simple DIY projects, you can quickly transform your backyard into you own stylish piece of heaven. Not only will you give it a new, trendy look, but you will also save a lot of money by renovating it yourself. Once you’ve finished restyling the backyard, you can grab a glass of cold lemonade and admire your work.

Transform the Old into the New
Transforming your old items into new pieces isn’t only affordable, but it’s also environmentally friendly. Instead of buying new outdoor furniture, which requires a sizable amount of money, you can restyle and repurpose your old pieces. Whether your old paint has peeled off, or you’re just tired of your indoor items, you can give them a new look in no time. You can transform your old indoor chairs into a new outdoor bench, or repaint your coffee table and try out new finishes and colors.

A Hammock for the Lazy Days
Picture
Once you lie back into your comfy hammock, you’ll wish to keep swinging forever. If you have two trees in your backyard, there’s no reason why there shouldn’t be a hammock in between. And if you don’t, then plant them immediately! The more you wait, the longer it will take. When it comes to the necessary materials, all you need is a sturdy fabric and a couple of ropes. This will be the perfect place where you can read your favorite book and drink a refreshing cocktail.

Two-in-One Outdoor Table
You can have an outdoor table that is both stylish and multifunctional. Opt for a table with a storage compartment where you can keep pillows, blankets or candles. Another great and multifunctional idea is to use a large bucket as a table – just place a wooden top over it. You can use the bucket as storage or you can fill it with ice and use it to keep your drinks cold and refreshing.

Gather around a Fire Pit
Picture
Just imagine having a small get-together with your friends, drinking tea around a fire pit on a chilly night. Sounds perfect, doesn’t it? Following just a few simple steps, you can build your own fire pit in no time. You’ll need a few concrete blocks, decorative rocks, gravel and a metal ring. Once you’ve finished it, grab some marshmallows and try it out!

A Peaceful Fountain
A water fountain in your backyard will add a sense of serenity and tranquillity while elevating its style. This is another project that you can do yourself without spending a fortune. Whether you want a large pond or a mini water garden, it will make your natural haven complete and stylish.

Plants for a Trendy Look
Your backyard renovation won’t be finished until you add several natural accessories – plants. Before buying them, you should consider the weather conditions of your area, and how much money you can spend on their maintenance. There’s a variety of low-maintenance plants for your garden that will make it look lush. You can plant some flowers into your wood stumps, old containers, drawers or even your old, rusty bathtub – this will definitely add character to your backyard.

Tame the Grass
Picture
Your backyard will look quite messy without structure and proper maintenance. If you want to give it an organized and polished look, you should consider using grass pavers. When it comes to materials, you can usually choose from brick, natural stone and concrete - each one having its own advantages and features. By experimenting with textures and colors, you can bring your backyard’s style to another level. To increase pavers’ longevity and preserve their aesthetic appeal, make sure to clean them regularly.

Backyard renovation and restyling is a smart investment that will increase the value of your home and provide you with your personal sanctuary. By being creative and opting for DIY projects, you can renovate your backyard and still stay within your budget limits.

Savvy Investment

Happy November Tuesday! It's been a very busy last couple of weeks, sorry I haven't posted a blog in a while. We have been moving stuff all week long because we just sold our beach cottage!

When Jim and I purchased the beach cottage, the goal was to renovate it, live there for three years, enjoy living close to the ocean, then sell it. We even entertained the idea of moving there full time, since it's much bigger than the house we currently live in.

Well, four years later, the timing seemed right to put it up for sale. Even though the real estate market has bounced back, there was still that risk that you are not going to make a profit when it's time to sell. I'm happy to say that all our hard work paid off, this investment proved to be a savvy decision after all.

One of the most enjoyable and rewarding part for me was designing each room's color scheme and shopping for the perfect furnishings & accessories to decorate the beach cottage. I believe that by presenting the house as a place someone can see themselves living in helped sell the beach cottage. One of the rooms that was a big selling point is the large sunroom, which is my favorite room (see before and after photos). Not only was the sunroom a hit, I was able to negotiate the furniture and accessories to make the deal happen.  I also did some savvy negotiating with other furniture and accessories towards the sale of the home.

We will miss the beach cottage, but what is even more rewarding than decorating the place is that a wonderful family will now get to enjoy it and make new memories in their new home. To my gleeful surprise, the family that purchased the home has a beautiful English Bulldog, which just proves that they were meant to live in the home that we lovingly worked on.

Seven Savvy Savings Tips at Starbucks

10/6/2013

Picture
Happy Savvy Sunday! If you are like me, I love to indulge in a good cup of coffee or latte or frappuccino at Starbucks. However, it's not the most frugal. But, you gotta treat yourself once in a while, right! You can still have your frappuccino and drink it too - for free!

Here are my top 7 Starbucks savings tips for you coffee lovers!

1. Rewards Card - sign up for their Rewards Program, where you get a free drink after purchasing 12 drinks. It's always a treat to get a free frappuccino with whip cream! Plus, with your rewards card - drink refills are free!

2. Free Birthday Treat - another benefit for signing up for their Rewards Program is that you get a free drink or food on your birthday!

3. Refills - even if you don't have a rewards card, brewed coffee refills are affordable, at only 50 cents during the same visit.

4. Add Chocolate - for that extra yummy taste (for free), add their chocolate powder to your coffee drink! You can also add cinnamon or vanilla powder.

5. Just Water - I often work on my laptop at Starbucks and sometimes I just want to sip on a cup of water. Simply ask the barista for a complementary cup of ice water.

6. Your Own Cup - BYOC, by bringing your own reusable mug, cup or tumbler you can save 10 cents on your drink.

7. Bigger Cup - instead of asking for "room for cream" - order a Tall in a Grande cup or a Grande in a Venti cup. You won't pay any more for a bigger cup, and you won't be wasting precious coffee.

Frugal Home Staging Tips

7/30/2013

Happy Thrifty Tuesday! I want to share some money saving tips when it comes to staging a home to sell. When my boyfriend Jim and I bought a house to flip a few years back, I not only wanted to save money on "staging" or furnishing the tiny cottage, but I wanted to spend practically zero money!

As we got closer to furnishing the house, I was telling Jim... wouldn't it be nice if I could "find" a couch, table, desk, etc.. to save money. Well, wouldn't you know it - the very next day, someone left a perfectly good couch and side table right outside on the curb! Can you believe how the universe was working in my favor!!

Most of the furniture were generously donated from friends or "found treasures" curbside. They just had to be refinished or painted for a brand new look. You can view the before and after photos on facebook.
Here are my frugal tips on how I saved money (or spent no money at all) on this house flip:
Picture
I mixed the "red" door color myself using "oops" paint from Home Depot. With darker colors, you need to do several coats, but it was worth it.
Picture
A friend gave me the formerly white wicker chairs, i painted them brown and "covered" the cushions with fabric remnants using packing tape in the back.

Picture
The loveseat was a curbside "find". I scored on a slipcover from a thrift store. The rest of the accessories were from yard sales or work samples.
Picture
The mannequin form was a display piece that I nabbed for a steal. The buyers loved the furnishings so much they paid extra on top of the asking price!

What does living frugally mean to me? Well, it does NOT mean being cheap, quite the contrary, I believe it’s being smart in your choices, such as how you spend your money everyday. Prioritize and take control of what’s important to you. I always strive to spend less on almost everything.

In this challenging economy, some of us have had to cut back on our expenses. Wouldn't it be nice to still have the things or services you want and need but not have to pay full price or even better, get them for free?

Choose value and quality over quantity or fads and you will come out ahead. The great benefit of being frugal is that it eliminates waste and clutter which in turn helps our environment.  By doing simple changes towards more “green” and frugal ways, together we can make an impact on our planet.

    About Me

    Picture
Hi, my name is Marissa Winfrey and I have been living the frugal life ever since I can remember. I have always looked for great bargains and getting the best value for my money without compromising style and quality.

My background is in visual display and interior decorating. It’s always been my objective to recommend cost effective solutions to my clients. I, of course, practice what I preach! I have furnished my own homes mostly with furnishings and decor items from my own little vintage boutique, estate sales, discount stores, flea markets, yard sales, thrift stores and even curbside discarded furniture!

My frugal practice goes beyond the home. I offer money saving tips on just about everything, from shopping to travel and everything in between. I hope my blog and website will inspire everyone to be their own Frugalista.

How to Retire Happy, Wild, and Free:
Retirement Wisdom That You Won't Get from Your Financial Advisor

How to Retire Happy, Wild, and Free offers inspirational advice on how to enjoy life to its fullest. The key to achieving an active and satisfying retirement involves a great deal more than having adequate financial resources; it also encompasses all other aspects of life -- interesting leisure activities, creative pursuits, physical well-being, mental well-being, and solid social support.

What sets this retirement book apart from all the others is its holistic approach to the fears, hopes, and dreams that people have about retirement. This international bestseller (over 110,000 copies sold in its first edition) goes way beyond the numbers that is often the main focus of retirement planning in most retirement books.
